About our hospital

Select Specialty Hospital – Downriver is a 35-bed critical illness recovery hospital located on the eighth floor of Henry Ford Wyandotte Hospital. We specialize in helping critically ill patients breathe, eat, walk, talk and think again as independently as possible.

Our hospital is accredited by The Joint Commission, an independent, not-for-profit organization that focuses on the safety and quality of care for persons treated at hospitals and health care facilities nationwide.

We take high acuity patients and specialize in ventilator liberation—helping people return to breathing on their own without mechanical support. Select Specialty Hospital's nationwide network of hospitals treat more than 11,000 ventilator-dependent patients annually.

One of the ways we differentiate is through our early mobility and therapy programs. Many of our patients come to us severely weakened following extended periods of immobility in an intensive care unit. We strive to get patients up and moving quickly after admission, as research shows that physical rehabilitation in a critical care setting improves mobility and overall physical function. Our hospitals focus on early movement to increase physical function upon discharge and to get patients back to their daily lives as quickly as possible.

Our physician-led, multi-disciplinary teams include nursing, respiratory, speech, physical and occupational therapists who collaborate from day one on a personalized care plan to help each patient achieve their goals.

Caregiver Resources

We are here for you, too

Something devastating has just happened and you may be wondering if anything will ever be the same. You likely have many questions. We know that for many, this is the first time you have experienced a critical illness recovery hospital.

It can be confusing, overwhelming and maybe even a little scary. We have developed this material just for you - the caregiver, family member and support person. Our hope is that it will help ease some of the stress you may be feeling and provide information to help answer some of your questions.

We know that a large part of our patients’ outcomes is determined by caregivers' health and well-being. You are an important member of the care team and we encourage your active involvement. The more you understand about your loved one’s condition, the services we provide and the types of resources available to you, the more empowered and less stressed you will feel.

While the time spent in the hospital can be stressful, preparing for and returning home can be equally as or even more challenging. To assist you with the transition and adjustment as your loved one leaves our care, we encourage you to talk to your care team about community resources and continued support.

We also have an online support resource that is exclusive to our patients. It is called CHET, which stands for Community, Healing, Education and Training. CHET provides information about diagnoses and conditions, what to expect throughout a recovery journey, guidelines and tips for returning home and self-care resources. Additionally, CHET features the ability to create a private online support community of family and friends to share progress updates and rally around a patient’s recovery.
