Select Specialty Hospital - South Dakota combines the specialized expertise of a large hospital with the personalized attention of a smaller setting.
Occasionally, patients in the hospital have a need for a longer acute care stay due to their illness, multiple injuries, trauma, or medical complications. The unique medical needs of these types of patients require more intensive, focused hospital care for optimal recovery. Select Specialty Hospitals are designed specifically to meet the needs of these types of extended acute care patients.
Select Specialty Hospital - South Dakota is licensed for 24 beds. JCAHO accredited and Medicare certified. We have 300 credentialed physicians across all specialties. We feature High Observation whereby a patient can be monitored more closely, be re-intubated, receive fluids, telemetry, or presser drips from ACLS trained staff on a 1:1 or 1:2 ratio.
Our premier program is our pulmonary vent weaning program. On average, we wean 86% of the vented patients in an average of 9 days. Our team of CRT, PT, and Nursing staff have excellent protocols and have been highly successful with the most difficult to wean patients, as our statistics show. In addition, our Medical Director is a pulmonologist and he accepts the vented patients from the Region as primary. We also have other pulmonologists credentialed and available to consult on our patients. Our vents are state-of-the-art Smart Cares. We utilize our mobility program and get people ambulating while on the vent.
Our next largest program is our Wound Care Program. We have a dedicated RN ET WCON CNP who directs the program and a dedicated wound care nurse who rounds weekly and notes the progress of wounds. We picture each patient's wound on admission and weekly thereafter. We have a dietician who oversees the nutritional requirements and protein calorie intake for optimal wound healing. We have plastic surgeons and surgeons credentialed with our hospital who can consult on the care of these patients. Typically, we see a Hospitalist or Internist managing the patients medically. Many of these patients have a diagnosis of osteomyelitis or are patients with infections that require IV antibiotics and may have complication of diabetes.
We have a Neuro/Post Trauma Program dedicated to the care and treatment of patients who have sustained head injuries either metabolically or traumatically. We are fortunate that one of our program directors is Board Certified in Neuro Critical Care. We provide coma stim and all the therapies.
Our fourth program is our Medically Complex Program. Typically these are the patients with multiple system failure. Often times they require dialysis which we are able to provide to patients in their own rooms. We offer hemodialysis 6 days per week. The Medically Complex patients may have complications from: surgery, illness, infection or injury coupled with other medical problems.
Select Specialty Hospital - South Dakota is dedicated to providing highly specialized and individualized care to all patients in order to achieve the optimal outcome for each patient.
Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and accredited by the Joint Commission. We participate with most major health insurers.
We are located on the 2400 floor(s) of Sanford Health Center, which allows us seamless transition of patients.

Dr. Rizan Hajal joined our hospital on June 1, 2007. Dr. Hajal is an independent practice physician in Sioux Falls and is Board Certified in Pulmonary, Internal Medicine and Critical Care. Dr. Hajal also has a special interest in sleep disorders.
In his role as medical director, Dr. Hajal not only provides leadership and consultation to our hospital, but also serves as a primary physician for many of our regional patients. His critical care, pulmonary and internal medicine expertise has been an asset in treating the very ill patients seen at our hospital whose last best chance for recovery is our hospital.
This past year Select Specialty Hospital - South Dakota was pleased to announce that we celebrated our 10th year of service in the community.
