Select Specialty Hospital - Northwest Indiana combines the specialized expertise of a large hospital with the personalized attention of a smaller setting.

Occasionally, patients in the hospital have a need for a longer acute care stay due to their illness, multiple injuries, trauma, or medical complications. The unique medical needs of these types of patients require more intensive, focused hospital care for optimal recovery. Select Specialty Hospitals are designed specifically to meet the needs of these types of extended acute care patients.

Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and JCAHO accredited. We participate with most major health insurers.

We are located on the 5th and 6th floor(s) of St. Margaret Mercy Hospital, which allows us seamless transition of patients.

Our Admissions Coordinator will process your referrals to Select Specialty Hospital - Northwest Indiana quickly and efficiently. An on-site evaluation of the patient will be completed by a Clinical Liaison within hours of the referral. The Clinical Liaison is your personal contact to Select Specialty Hospital. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide. Once an admission decision has been determined, the patient can often transfer the same day.

What Our Patients are Saying About Us

Success Story 1

Mr. Nolen was admitted to a short-term acute care hospital on August 14th for a history of mental status change related to an acute left cerebrovascular accident requiring being placed on ventilator support. His history consisted of being a 49-year–old with history of smoking and early stages of coronary artery disease and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

He was admitted to Select Specialty on August 31, 2007 for ventilator weaning, treatment of pneumonia, CHF, infections to the sinuses and COPD exacerbation. He also had tube feedings and I.V. antibiotics for treatment of a pneumonia and sinus infection. He received physical, occupational and speech therapy along with nutritional support.

Weaning trials were started upon admission and he was weaned off the ventilator including began to take food by mouth upon discharge.

He was successfully discharged to Rehab Institute of Chicago on October 3, 2007.

Success Story 2

Mr. Tommy Lymon was admitted on December 23, 2009. He presented with COPD exacerbation was trached, on ventilator support and had a feeding tube for nutrition.

Mr. Lymon has multiple medical issues which included: wound care, trach care, PT and OT, I.V. antibiotics for infection and history of coronary artery disease, pseudomonas, pulmonary embolism and diabetes. He had history of smoking, but quit about 12 years ago.

He was started on vent weaning by January 12th was off ventilator and was able to eat a soft diet Physical, occupational and speech therapy worked aggressively to increase his strength and endurance.

Mr. Lymon has done very well while in our hospital, his wounds have healed, his enteral feedings have been discontinued and he is being discharged home today January 29, 2010, with home health care.
