Occasionally, patients in the hospital have a need for a longer acute care stay due to their illness, multiple injuries, trauma, or medical complications. The unique medical needs of these types of patients require more intensive, focused hospital care for optimal recovery. Select Specialty Hospitals are designed specifically to meet the needs of these types of extended acute care patients.

Select Specialty Hospital - Madison provides long-term acute care for a variety of patients including, pulmonary, ventilator-dependent, neuro post trauma, wound care, cardiac, renal and medically complex patients.

Pulmonary/Ventilator Weaning: Specialized care for patients with acute or chronic respiratory disorders who may have tracheotomies, ventilators or require extensive respiratory treatments to maintain normal breathing without mechanical support.

Select Specialty Hospital measures success based upon the level of satisfaction expressed by our patients, their families and our referring customers.

Interdisciplinary Team Meetings are held regularly to review the patient's progress and to set new goals. Discharge is arranged when the acute medical needs of the patient have been met and he or she is ready for the next level of care or to return home.

Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and accredited by the Joint Commission. We participate with most major health insurers.

Our Admissions Coordinator will process your referrals to Select Specialty Hospital - Madison quickly and efficiently. An on-site evaluation of the patient will be completed by a Clinical Liaison within hours of the referral. The Clinical Liaison is your personal contact to Select Specialty Hospital. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide. Once an admission decision has been determined, the patient can often transfer the same day.

Medical Director

Our Medical Director is John P. Schilling, M.D. He is Board Certified in Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. Dr. Schilling graduated from Washington University, St. Louis. He is a Clinical Professor in the Pulmonary Section of the Department of Medicine for the University of Wisconsin Medical Foundation.
