Occasionally, patients in the hospital have a need for a longer acute care stay due to their illness, multiple injuries, trauma, or medical complications. The unique medical needs of these types of patients require more intensive, focused hospital care for optimal recovery. Select Specialty Hospitals are designed specifically to meet the needs of these types of extended acute care patients.

At Select Specialty Hospital - Knoxville we are proud to feature an excellent comprehensive pulmonary program that includes intensive ventilator weaning protocols, highly individualized treatment strategies, daily physician visits, specialty physician consults, management of other medical conditions with comprehensive patient and family education.

As a Long Term Acute Care Hospital, Select Specialty - Knoxville cares for patients who require a longer acute care hospitalization for critical and complex medical, and or surgical conditions. Patients benefit from an integrated approach of intensive nursing care, focused respiratory services and individualized therapies. The hospital is staffed by a variety of professionals including physicians, nurses, case managers, respiratory therapists, physical, occupational and speech therapists, dieticians and pharmacists.

Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and accredited by the Joint Commission. We participate with most major health insurers.

We are located on the North 4th floor(s) of Fort Sanders Regional Medical Center, which allows us seamless transition of patients.

Our Admissions Coordinator will process your referrals to Select Specialty Hospital - Knoxville quickly and efficiently. An on-site evaluation of the patient will be completed by a Clinical Liaison within hours of the referral. The Clinical Liaison is your personal contact to Select Specialty Hospital. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide. Once an admission decision has been determined, the patient can often transfer the same day.

Medical Director

Dr. Walter Zibas is the Medical Director for the Knoxville Select Specialty Hospital, and is board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine.

He is a graduate of ETSU - James H. Quillen College of Medicine with an internship and residency at the University of Alabama Medical Center.
