Select Specialty Hospital - Houston West is one of three Select locations serving the Houston market. Select Specialty Hospital - Houston West has an excellent wound care program and a renowned pulmonary specialty. It is, simply, one of the best of its kind.

Our Hospital's Pulmonary Program: Our pulmonary program is, according to quality reporting, one of the best in the nation. The program weans patients from mechanical ventilators. In hospitals of our type, 70 percent of ventilator patients, on average, are successfully weaned from their machines. We are proud to report that in 2011 Houston West weaned 95 percent of its ventilator patients. Between 2009 and 2011, our hospital reported no cases of ventilator-associated pneumonia - otherwise a very common malady in these cases. High standards of quality care like this one are evident throughout Select Medical's Houston hospitals.

Success Story: Barry Oakes, Respiratory Care Patient
After suffering a devastating stroke, Barry Oakes was admitted to Select Specialty Hospital - Houston West with multiple challenges including a tracheostomy tube. He was, in short, unable to eat, speak or walk. At the same time, Barry's wife Nicole, discovered she was pregnant with twins. During the 33 days Barry spent at Houston West, he made remarkable progress. The staff utilized the highly regarded Select Specialty Hospital Pulmonary / Ventilator Program and, as a result, Barry was weaned off all oxygen and the tracheostomy tube was successfully removed. After comprehensive physical therapy designed to improve his strength and health, Barry was ready to leave the hospital and enjoy special time with his growing family. By the time he was discharged from Select Specialty Hospital Houston West, Barry was breathing on his own and was able to walk with assistance, feed himself and talk to his wife. Barry and Nicole come back to visit the hospital frequently, bringing their beautiful twin daughters to see the hospital and staff. Barry has returned to full-time work and has plans to run the half marathon with staff members of Select Specialty Hospital this June. We invite families to contact our friendly staff to tour our hospital. We are conveniently located in West Houston off of IH-10. Our free-standing facility offers modern amenities, including an in-house CT Scanner and all-private rooms.

Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and accredited by the Joint Commission. We participate with most major health insurers.

Our Admissions Coordinator will process your referrals to Select Specialty Hospital - Houston West quickly and efficiently. An on-site evaluation of the patient will be completed by a Clinical Liaison within hours of the referral. The Clinical Liaison is your personal contact to Select Specialty Hospital. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide. Once an admission decision has been determined, the patient can often transfer the same day.
