Occasionally, patients in the hospital have a need for a longer acute care stay due to their illness, multiple injuries, trauma, or medical complications. The unique medical needs of these types of patients require more intensive, focused hospital care for optimal recovery. Select Specialty Hospitals are designed specifically to meet the needs of these types of extended acute care patients.

Select Specialty Hospital - Houston Heights is one of three locations serving the Houston Market. Select Specialty Hospital - Houston Heights has a renowned pulmonary program as well as an excellent wound care program.

Conveniently located in central Houston, our free standing hospital offers in-house services such as: on-site surgery, CT scan and hyperbaric therapy.

Select Specialty Hospital - Houston Heights' Wound Center is recognized as a leader in the treatment and care of chronic, non-healing wounds. Our highly trained treatment team includes physicians, physical therapists, Wound Ostomy Continence Nurses (WOCN), Certified Hyperbaric Technicians and other allied health professionals. The outpatient wound care clinic is open Tuesdays and Thursdays for patient care.

Each patient is also assigned a case manager who will guide their case from admission through discharge. The case manager is available to answer questions, assist with insurance and to plan a safe, timely and appropriate discharge. Select Specialty Hospitals are Medicare certified and JCAHO accredited. We participate with most major health insurers.

Our Admissions Coordinator will process your referrals to Select Specialty Hospital - Houston Heights quickly and efficiently. An on-site evaluation of the patient will be completed by a Clinical Liaison within hours of the referral. The Clinical Liaison is your personal contact to Select Specialty Hospital. They will be happy to answer any questions you may have about the services we provide. Once an admission decision has been determined, the patient can often transfer the same day.

Medical Director

Chi C. Mao, M.D., Ph.D

Dr. Chi Mao was born in Canton, China. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and holds a Ph.D. in Physiology and Biophysics. Dr. Mao attended the University of Texas-Houston Health Science Center for Medical School and Internship. He attended Baylor College of Medicine for his Residency Program.

Dr. Mao has been practicing medicine over twenty years and has authored numerous publications and formal presentations. Dr. Mao's major fields of research interest included neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, gastrointestinal physiology and endocrinology.

Dr. Chi C. Mao has been Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer at Select Specialty Hospital-Houston Heights since 1994.
